From Missionary to Web Designer
A journey of faith, service, deconstruction and discovering how God prepares us for unexpected callings.
MY STORY
A New way to serve
I'm Diana Ramos, a remote web designer for Catholic parishes and mission-driven nonprofits, based in Virginia Beach. I'm originally from Honduras and spent 16 years there as a missionary. After moving to Virginia Beach in 2022, I discovered I could serve mission-driven organizations through web design.
My journey into web design began in 2018 when our organization's website needed help. I volunteered to rebuild it, and something clicked—I realized I loved using technology to help nonprofits share their story and connect with the people they serve. What started as a practical solution sparked a passion.
"After 16 years of full-time missionary work, I found myself in a season of transition—wondering how I could continue serving without those daily, hands-on mission activities that had defined my life."
Moving to the United States meant stepping away from the direct connection with people that I'd known for so long. I struggled with my identity and wondered: how could I continue serving in this new chapter?
That's when everything started to make sense. The web design skills I'd discovered in 2018—what seemed like just a practical solution at the time—were actually preparation for what came next. I didn't realize it then, but God was preparing me for a new stage of service.
When I was offered the opportunity to work with a Catholic parish after moving to Virginia Beach, everything clicked into place. All the courses on web design I'd taken, my missionary background, my understanding of parish life—it all converged. I realized this was my new way to serve: helping parishes and nonprofits through web design.
Even though that first parish didn't serve a bilingual community, working with them opened my eyes to a bigger opportunity. I realized there are parishes across the country serving diverse communities—parishes that need someone who can truly create bilingual websites, not just translations. Someone who understands both the language and the culture. That's when I saw how my unique background—native Spanish speaker, 16 years in cross-cultural mission work, web design skills—could serve a real need.
It's interesting how my college degree in International Relations connects to this work—understanding different cultures, building bridges between communities, facilitating communication. Even though I never studied web design formally, my entire journey prepared me for this calling.
So after years of preparation, I decided to fully commit to this path. I created my portfolio and launched my business, ready to serve Catholic parishes and nonprofits with the same dedication I brought to mission work.
Today, I serve Catholic parishes and nonprofits nationwide from Virginia Beach. My background gives me a unique perspective: as a native Spanish speaker fluent in English, I can create websites in either language, or seamlessly bilingual sites for parishes serving diverse communities. Beyond language, my 16 years in cross-cultural mission work mean I truly understand serving varied communities with grace and authenticity.
"Today, I pursue this path professionally with the same heart of service I had as a missionary. While I now charge for my work—offering fair, parish-friendly pricing—I still feel like I'm serving."
My clients include Holy Spirit Catholic Church (parish), Missioners of Christ (nonprofit), and SEEN nonprofit. I'm certified in UX Design, UI Design, and SEO/GEO. I understand what parishes need—mass schedules, online giving, event management. And I understand what nonprofits need—donor engagement, newsletters, impact stories. I create solutions tailored to your mission.
This is my calling, it's just taken a new form. I haven't walked away from my mission; I've discovered a new way to live it out.
